I think we are all anxious to get out of the house and do some work in our lawns and landscape beds. Getting leaves and sticks cleaned from the winter will prevent matting of grass and look good too. Adding a fresh layer of mulch is an great way to make your landscape look new again. I would suggest holding off on plantings until we get more consistent warmer temperatures and be sure not to do too much when the soil is wet. Digging in wet soil disturbs the air pockets and can ruin the soil profile.

Still a little early to be putting down fertilizer on your lawn. If you really are feeling an itch to get your pre-emergent fertilizer down, make sure it is a high quality, slow release product. This will allow the lawn to “wake up” on it’s own and continue to develop its root system. Same goes for seeding, we need to see the soil temperatures rise a bit more for any germination to be successful. Hopefully sunny and warmer temperatures are ahead soon and we have a great start to the gardening year.
